چکیده

Collapsing collisionless particle systems form gravitational bound halos with cuspy density profiles. Also hierarchical merging of these systems produce remnants with cuspy central density profiles. These results lead to the assumption of cuspy NFW [5] profiles for the density distribution in dark matter halos. However, observed rotation curves in disk galaxies suggest dark matter halos with isothermal core. The same kind of problem can be found for globular clusters, which show cores in their density profiles but should be cuspy if they where formed through a cold collapse.[4, 3] We are showing how small, massive, and compact objects can efficiently transform cuspy stellar systems into density profiles with an isothermal core.

Formation and disruption of dark-matter cusps are reviewed. Accumulation of baryons at the center of a halo can displace the dark matter, converting singular density cusps into low-density cores. The displaced mass can be of order ∼ 10M• with M• the mass of the infalling population. If M• is identified with the masses of the black holes currently observed at the centers of bright galaxies, pred...

HST observations show that the surface brightness profiles of early-type galaxies have central cusps. I summarize here the results of van der Marel (1999), which show that the observed characteristics of these cusps are consistent with the hypothesis that all early-type galaxies have central black holes (BHs) that grew adiabatically in homogeneous isothermal cores. The models suggest a roughly ...

The formation of supermassive black holes (SMBH) is intimately related to galaxy formation, although precisely how remains a mystery. I speculate that formation of, and feedback from, SMBH may alleviate problems that have arisen in our understanding of the cores of dark halos of galaxies.

Galactic Mergers with Supermassive Black Holes

We present the results of N -body simulations of the accretion of high-density dwarf galaxies by low-density giant galaxies. Both galaxies contain power-law central density cusps and point masses representing supermassive black holes; the ratio of galaxy masses is 3 : 1. The cusp of the dwarf galaxy is always disrupted during the merger, leading to a remnant with a weak power law in the intrins...

Nuclear Cusps and Cores in Early-type Galaxies as Relics of Binary Black Hole Mergers

We present an analysis of the central cusp slopes and core parameters of early-type galaxies using a large database of surface brightness profiles obtained from Hubble Space Telescope observations. We examine the relation between the central cusp slopes, core parameters, and black hole masses in early-type galaxies, in light of two models that attempt to explain the formation of cores and densi...
